Power steering reservoir help

Hi, I have a 1986 Range Rover. The power steering reservoir has a large metal cap with a coil spring and some sort of widget in it. There is no dip stick or indication of where the level should be. It looks to be low, below the level of what looks like a metal float under the spring. I haven't seen anything like it before. Can you help???

I don't know what you are describing! Here's the exploded view of 86 Ranger Power steering pump! Is this your part?

It doesn't look like that, but iv'e just been told it is a 'jam tin' earlier type with a strainer. Thanks for your help. Donation on Friday!
