ive done a head job and managed to get the valve timing out. the cam gears are reversable ( the gears have I & E on both gears exactly aross each side of both gears ) after i removed the cam gears i learned that the gears could be put back on upside down or upside right up because the factory put a hole on both sides of each gear that locks it to the cam shaft pin. Now my firing order on the distributer (firing coil) has had the numbers cleaned off. The engine turn over easily but won't start. while turning over i hear a consistant drum like sound coming fom the throttle body bowl espeically louder with the butterfly open. So how do i determine which cam is out and what is the firing order on the coil. Also i've been trying to start the engine without the waterpump, altenator, power steering ect. pullies and belts andtiming cover. will that keep it from starting? thx

IF you are hearing a drum sound from the intake. something is wrong. Go to the BELT ROUTING DIAGRAMS site on this page and look up the info there for timing.

Are you getting spark to the plugs?
