1987 Jeep YJ headlights cut off

1987 Jeep YJ 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 136000 miles
my headlights only work on bright, when i put them on regular they dont turn on at all. also when i was driving with them on they just cut off for a second then cut back on and repeated this multiple times, then they remained on, then started doing it again. i was wondering if you knew why this was happening
