Grand cherokee clunking noise

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has 243,000 + miles. Recently I have been hearing a metal on metal clunking noise near the front of the vehicle, possibly located from the left front to center front of the vehicle. I have to drive the vehicle about 30 miles before the sound starts, when it does, This noise occurs during deceleration. If I accelerate, the noise stops, if I decelerate it begins again. If I put the vehicle in neutral during the deceleration while it is occurring, the noise does not go away.......any ideas what this is? TIA
