2004 Jeep Liberty unable to change gears

2004 Jeep Liberty 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 110000 miles
When the engine is turned off, I am able to switch gears smoothly. But when I start my engine I am unable to engage any gears from neutral. But if start my car in the second gear then I can at least drive around forcing(not a smooth transition) it to other gears. But if I start the car in first gear I can shift to neutral but not to any other gears. At red lights, I end up switching off the car and restarting with second gear.
This is a problem I saw last winter occasionally, but this time for the past two weeks it has been bad, never had the problem during summers.
