2004 Jeep Liberty check engine light

Light came on a month ago. Went out, now back on again. I called dealer for tune up and check light
Was told jeep may need 30k maintanence which may cost$600 dollars. Does a 2004 Jeep need a tune up?
Car runs good, sometimes seems to skip or jerk (not sure how to explain)

Is 600 bucks average cost in MA for the above.

Go to a reputable independent shop and have them scan the computer for code/s and also decide there for them to perform the maintenance services-Evaluate the costs between the two-
