2003 Jeep Liberty smells like burnt wax

2003 Jeep Liberty 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 92200 miles
For the last 3 weeks, 'when the engine gets hot (usually when it is hot outside) - there is a smell of burnt wax (like when you blow out a non scented candle). It comes in through the vents if I am stopped. My mechanic said it seems to be the alternator area? I replaced the alternator and battery in June 2009 and ceramic brake done 3 weeks ago. It is not the brakes. All fluids appear good. We are all stumped and I don't want a fire. Any ideas?
