Engine Cooling problem
1990 Jeep Laredo 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic
A month ago my brother and I cleaned and flushed the radiator because the coolant was brown. I also changed the reservior tank. I'm not sure if we actually refilled the system completely. It drove fine for a while, but recently the Jeep has been over heating. It has gotten to the point that I had to change the reservior tank again because the threads on the tank had stripped and caused the cap to not tighten completely. I bought and installed a new tank and just spent the better half of the afternoon trying to get all the air out of the radiator thinking that could be part of the problem. After realizing that the fill amount is at the top of the post (I was filling to the top of the reservior tank), I got the coolant level just right. The guage read right above 210. I felt the top hose and it is warm, does this mean that the thermostat is open and letting coolant through? The top of the radiator didn't feel warm or hot at all. I took the Jeep for a test run and the temperature guage immediately climbed. When I got back, the radiator felt hot, there was steam coming from the tank cap, and the tank had expanded. I'm not sure if its a bad thermostat or if its something else. Help please...
