Hello ..

You should not need to have the switch back to the off posistion to remove switch from column

IGNITION SWITCH

Removal
Lower column and remove switch mounting screws. Disconnect harness connector. Remove switch.
Installation
Move switch slider to "ACC" position. Move switch slider back 2 clicks to "OFF-UNLOCK" position. Insert remote rod in switch slider, and position switch on column. Do not move slider. Install and tighten screws.

LOCK CYLINDER
Fig. 1: Typical Column Type Ignition Switch Lock Cylinder Removal On most vehicles, push in to release lock retainer.
Removal
Turn lock cylinder clockwise 2 detent positions beyond "OFF-LOCK" position. Compress lock cylinder retaining tab using a thin bladed screwdriver and remove lock cylinder.
Installation
Insert key in lock. Hold cylinder sleeve, and turn key clockwise until key stops. Insert cylinder lock into bore with cylinder tab aligned with keyway in housing. Push cylinder in until it bottoms. Rotate cylinder counterclockwise to engage lock sector, and push in until cylinder tab engages in housing groove.

If the key is missing, you may need to drill out the lock cylinder retaining pin

See my profile, Dave H has given you the correct procedure ( I really think you are referring to the LOCK CYLINDER)

I know you CANNOT DEPRESS THE TAB, TILL THE KEY IS IN THE CORRECT POSITION. Been there several times myself!

Are you into the Column, inside/ under the steering wheel?

Do not go crazy and beat the crap out of stuff!

Do you have the correct key in the column?

Generously OIL the Key hole.

Try it with your fingers 1st!

Insure you are Depressing the Lever to turn the key (the Birdie Finger Lever!)

Turn your steering wheel/ Steering wheel shaft both directions while trying

Tilt your column (if equipped) Different positions and try

Try Channel Lock pliers, GENTLY. Too much force and the OUTER RING will come off of the Keyhole part!

LAST RESORT--Screw in a Slide hammer into the INNER KEYHOLE, Yank out the Center

Then dig in the bottom of the Part thats left inside, till you can depress the TAB (SEE DAVE H's Diagram)

We're here for you.

How about some good news?

Your Turn

Electrical problem
1985 Jeep CJ7 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 138K miles

Replaced ignition switch but still have problem. Now think just not positioned on column correctly. Whe I let off the key in cranking it wants to fire. Currently no fire while cranking but as I said it fires whent I let go of key in an instant, but does bot keep running. Wierd thing is I may be able to get in it and start it today, drive it stop and it not start again. What is the proper way to position the switch after instalation, before I tighten it down?

We just replaced the switch in an 83 cj7 and when we took out the old switchit was all the way tight against the sliding mounting holes, tight towards the drivers seat, meaning slid as far towards the rear of the vehicle as possible. The other comment I had was, while replacing the new one, the manual said to move the switch into the off position. This was accompolished by moving the switch first to the ACC position which is the farthest position away from the start position(the position that is only momentary, and is moved back automatically after you let go) and then move it two clicks back in the other direction away from "ACC" to put it in the off position. THen install the switch on to the rack rod tip while the key is in the "Lock" position. This should put the switch in the right place. Hope this is helpful. We replaced our switch only to find that our problem was not caused by a bad switch and we have yet to find the cause. If you have any idea what may cause the ignition to try and start the engine when it is only in the "run" or "on" position please let us know. Thanks.

When 83 CJ7 ignition is turned to the "run" or "on" setting the starter engages and it begins to try and start before the ignition is ever turned to the "start" position. We have replaced the ignition switch and the solenoid with no luck. The problem may have started after the changing of the solenoid but we do not know how to test the solenoid (with volt/Ohm meter), we do not know what readings we should get from what terminals to test. Also not sure if this is the problem. Help!

Possibilities are :
wrong solenoid /relay
check wiring at the solenoid
making sure
You didn’t switched the red wire with Lt-blue wire at the solenoid

We are getting a 12V read on the red wire that plugs into Solenoid at the on position and the run position which makes me think that it is not the solenoid. What else controls the ignition? We thought that maybe a bad Ignition Control Module may be the cause but we disconnected that and tested the voltage there and it is just connected via a splice off of the red solenoid wire and that solenoid wire still got 12 V at run and start with the ICM disconnected?

Starter solenoid have 4 terminals
two big and two small
bigger terminals its wires comes from the battery and the other to the starter
the small red wire should have battery power with key on
the LT. Blue wire it should have battery volts only when key in the start position
and it should be connected at the solenoid terminal that has an S on it
check if you had switch the red and blue wires at the solenoid
