oil pressure drops to zero at idle, but as a drive or rev the engine, it raises, but never getting above about 40

Install a Mechanical Gauge, You can temporary it on the engine (reg 0-100 gauge) Or just purchase a Parts store model (has little tube) and run it under the hood---thru your window. If it works out, that engine is fine (bad gauge or sender) Install it permanently thru the firewall.
Let me know what you got, maybe Mr. Engine is OK, 258 is a tuff puppy!
