1979 Jeep CJ7 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual

Hi,
My 1979 jeep CJ-5 has been driving fine for weeks. But last night while out driving around I stopped for a minute at a store and when I tried to re-start the engine, it made a sound similar to the noise made when you try and start a car's engine that is already turned on. I repeated a couple times only to get the same sound. I made sure the car was not in gear and the clutch was not jammed. After almost giving up and about 10 minutes or so, I attempted to push the car a foot or so, then tried the ignition again and it started right up and worked fine during my drive home. However this morning i went to start up the engine and it initially cranked right up, but after idling a couple seconds it conked out. I attempted to restart the engine and it made the same noise as if the engine was already on. I repeated 2-3 times only to get the same effect. Any idea what this might be?
