Have a 79 CJ5. We got it stuck in the clay mud. Lost battery after that. Serpentine belt slipped off. Parked it for a couple of weeks to take care of a driveshaft problem. Yesterday got it put back together, new batter, now when I try to crank it it acts like it's going to start then makes some kind of loud clacking noise. I'm new at the Jeep thing but am loving the CJ! What the heck is that noise and what do I need to check? Manual is at the post office waiting on me.

See my profile, You say it will turn over?

This sound, can you isolate it to either motor (where) or to tranny, Starter or bellhousing etc?

Sometimes you can shove a piece of 5/16 or 3/8 hose, 2-3 feet long in your ear----use like a Stethoscope to pin down an area of the "Racket"

What have you messed with, be honest, or at least blame it on your buddy!

Serpentine Belt? You got a 304? Or has stuff been changed from original status?

Not trying to be SMART---I CAN HELP--Just cannot see/hear what you are seeing/hearing!

Read Post "1985 Jeep CJ 7 Stalls when Hot" IN CJ 7 FORUM (14 responses)(6 cylinder, lots of good stuff in post!) Get back wih me soon, WILL HELP YOU ALL I CAN! ---You will see the extent, I am willing to help!

Do you have a Manual (which one) so that we might reference this thing in unison?

Did you maybe bend a Fan Blade, pulley, ETC., Watch moving parts for hitting something while your EVIL BUDDY (Who "made" you get into this mess!) TURNS THE ENGINE OVER.

If the fan is bent---DO NOT STRAIGHTEN IT! ! !----Get a new one!---Otherwise your HOOD/HEAD may get a notch taken out---When the weakened metal, turns loose of a BLADE!

Please respond with any and everything that Your Jeep experienced just before, and after the "INCIDENT" your buddy got you into! (To include over-reving--engine damage due to extreme "pushing the limits") [Yes, been there, done that, Got it out of my system, at the expense of 2 CJ 5s]

Love, Turddog

Cannot blame evil buddies, I did it and take full blame for it. But I do have nice buddies who know what the heck they are doing thank goodness! The problem turned out to be the clutch. He said that I have to have a belt for the alternator too. Once that's on me and ole CJ should be ready to go play again.

I did finally get my manual and plan on utilizing it! Obviously I'm a rookie with this thing but if these things keep happening I should find my way around underneath the hood soon. As much as I appreciate the good samaritans coming to my rescue I really gotta learn how to take care of her myself. Otherwise Ima be sitting in the woods some day stranded!

Thanks much for the advice, I'll post updates on the jeep's (and my) progress!

Dear DrtyGirl, Glad you know whats wrong--HOPE REPAIR IS EZ and INEXPENSIVE.

I sorta had to change my name (I've had since Dec 2008) They said It "Offended Some", So I COMPLIED.

Does my new one offend you? Is it, one to remember?

I am going to send you a "PM" (private message) look at your index to get to it.

If you need additional help, and SPECIFICALLY WANT IT FROM ME---Come back to this post, and continue to commo---I will be notified of activity, or you can send back a RE: (PM, from me) if the site will allow it (sometimes they want you to have written X number of posts 1st, if you initiate the PM)

Regardless of your situation, I have many manuals, one of which (I wish I had taken better care of since 1983) Is the 1979 AMC JEEP SERVICE MANUAL (sorta sacred scrolls, breaks down a Jeep of similar years, to NOTHINGNESS--EZ to follow too), I didn't realize how good and important it would be to me [I think they accidently left it in the second Jeep I bought, when I was a Airborne Ranger--in the US ARMY.] I can really help you alot on stuff Now and Later.

This PM (I send now) most surely will contribute stuff you NEED/ WANT to know about your Jeep. IF YOU RESPOND

Always, "The MEDIC"----(sorta my new image, hand in hand with new name)

My 7th Jeep (owned 6 CJ 5s before this, and 8th is '77 CJ 5--Never had any other primary driver)

I wasn't at all offended by your old name, but I do like the new one. I'll try to get some pictures up this weekend of the girl in action!

Pics would be good, send at least one of your engine, prior to to MUD BATH BAPTISM.I know you're about to submit Her to!

Mod Pics do you any good. At least the "Nelsomatic-Enviro-Controls"---- (how to use your heater/vent controls) Djew already know how the Heat/Air knob worked. Were you able to view all of the albums? (I think I sent you 9?)

Do you have any other things you need to address, fixin'-wise?

Let me know

Wow! I'm up and running on hills like never before my old goodies is now over after some few problem which I think you too can look to keep you on and avoid failure. My jeep won't go over since the shaft broke as I rolled on a hill but I couldn't get over it. If you have such a problem please check about it. Also thanks my great Mechanics.
