2002 Jeep Cherokee Repair Question

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 65K
I have an '02 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 65,000 miles with the 4.0L engine. It has a ticking sound when it warms up. At first I thought that it was a lifter ticking. After listening closely with a stethoscope, I realized that the ticking sound is coming from the camshaft positioning sensor on the right hand side of the motor near the oil filter. It runs fine, no loss of power or any problems, other than the ticking sound (which drives me NUTS!)
What causes this? And if I replace the sensor would the noise go away, or is it a deeper problem?
Thanks!
