Hi - I've noticed this oil leak in my garage recently. It seems to come out everty other day or so. Went to the mechanic is he told me the leak was from the oil pan. He did not tell me how much the repair would cost but he added some dye in the engile and told me to come back the next day.I have not gone back to him yet cause i'm trying to get an understanding myself of what is required for this task.
Assuming the leak is from the oil pan that would require a new gasket, whayt would be an average cost for this car and for this sertvice. I do not like to get ripped off and if you have any tips on how to tell for sure where the leak is coming from that would be appreciated
Thank you

Hello,

Well, the mechanic is trying to find out exactly were the leak is and that is most likely why you weren't given a price for the repair. The dye that was put in is how they will tell exactly were the leak is. However, if you have been driving around for more that a day you have most likely ruined the chance to find the exact leak.

Even though they said it was leaking at the oil pan they had some doubt since they put the dye in. It could be the Front Main Seal the Rear Main Seal or like was stated the oil pan.

My suggestion would be to go back and see if they can locate the leak and get an estimate then repost and I will give you my opinion on the repair cost.

I can give you a guestimate on a oil pan which would be about $500 - $700 depending on labor rate and difficulty.
