2004 Jaguar X-Type Replacing front and rear brake pads

Brakes problem
2004 Jaguar X-Type 6 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 96000 miles

I have changed the front brake pads before and have no problem with that but I have never done the rear and I have been hearing horror stories about changing the rear such as needing a specialty tool from a ford dealership to emergency brake not working after the replacment pads where installed . Is any or all of it true ? is this something I can do myself ? Do I need a specialty tool? I there any what outs that I should be aware of?
