1999 Isuzu Vehicross replacing starter

1999 Isuzu Vehicross 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 157000 miles
I am trying to replace the starter and have both bolts out and the wires loose , but there is not enough room to get it out. Do I have to drop the exhaust or is there an easier way?
