Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Isuzu Trooper Four Wheel Drive Manual 100000 miles

My isuzuz trooper started white smoking on start up and lasted a few minutes. Over the weeks it got worse and now it seems to be smoking most of the time but hasn't changed the engine performance, although it misses slightly every so often. On the odd occasion there has been no smoke on start up. Yesterday occasionally it gave out a puff of black smoke.

Hi kermeury,

White smoke is associated with moisture so it could be condensation in the exhaust depending on weather. However it should go away after the exhaust is heated up. The smoke would not be very thick.

It could also be from the engine if there is any head or gasket problem. Is the cooling system in proper order?

If the smoke is slightly bluish in color, then it is oil being burnt up and would be much thicker. It could be valve seals or piston ring problem.

Occasional jerking can be associated with the black smoke. Either one or more of the cylinders is misfiring.
Check the plugs and high tension system.
