Engine Cooling problem
1996 Isuzu Rodeo Question 6 cyl Automatic 200 miles

My question is this, the truck sat for some time and after a tune up it over heated. It sat for about a month then we made sure it had water in it then took it for a drive. Temp got warm so we replaced the thermostat. 3 days later it over heated again with lots of smoke and it died. Mechanic checked and it had 2 leaks from 2 hoses that were then replaced along with flushed out radiator, new water and antifreeze and oil change. With ac running cold, temp gets almost to hot only when running on expressway. When I slow down or take foot of gas or come to a stop, temp goes down. Not to normal temp but a little more warm. At that time you can smell antifreeze but there is never any smoke. Try to turn on heater but there is no hot air. Another mechanic looked at it and said it could possibly be the radiator. What do you suggest. I do not have alot of cash to take it somewhere for a diagnostic. The cheaper the fix the better!

Hi rgodden,

Thank you for the donation.

If you do not have coolant losses issues then yes, the problem could possibly be due to the radiator.

Symptoms indicates the cooling efficiency for high speed driving is insufficient and possible causes are :

1. Clogged radiator, either internal or external. Check the front of radiator and fins for air restriction. If it is internal, the radiator either has to be serviced or replaced.
2. Weak water pump. This would result in overheating if the engine is revved slightly even when stationary.
3. Faulty thermostat, not opening sufficiently.
4. Coolant passage restriction.

The smell of antifreeze could be due to some leakage somewhere and you should get a pressure test done to verify the leak. However since repairs on the cooling system was carried out recently, the coolant could be residues from the repairs. It would take some time for the smell to go away.
