Too much oil

I started my 1988 pickup after having loaned it to someone and white smoke bellowed from the tail pipe. I shut the engine down and noticed oil had blown out through the exhaust header gasket where it connects to the exhaust system. I checked the oil; the level was about half way up the length of the dipstick. Have I messed something up or do I just need to drain the oil to its normal level?

start by adjusting the level. oil will be in the exhaust for a little bit so expect more smoke at the beginning
