My truck has been running perfectly for the last 5 years. No problems, new brakes, new tires.

Over the last 3 years, we took maybe 20 trips over the mountains ) we live in denver), and, on occasion, the car would smoke from the back, but upon stoping, it seemed to actually be smoking from the front.

I took it to a friend, and he said I had some harmless oil and trasnmission fluid leak, and it just looked and smelled bad becaue the leaks were falliing and dripping into the exhaust system, making things seem worse than they really were.

NOW, a bout 3 months later, my car has a HELL of a time gettting out of first gear*1st start, red light, stop sign, and kicks and jerks eventually into first gear, then after first gear, EVERY other automatic shift is perfectlyt fine, highway perfect, then back to the stoplight, same nonsense.

Is this tramsmission, fule injector/.I am horrible with cars, but have no idea how to invest the LEAST to get this old car running right again! 57 year's old and 4 kids, and not many ways to go, but we can't go down to 1 car for at least 5 more years!

Thanks in advance for your care and consideration! We look forward to your help!

Transmission Doesnt Upshift out of 1st off a stoplight/sign.

Step one: Start by the cheapest (and often the most obvious culprit ) which is check the transmission fluid and filter.

Check the fluid level at 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and add fluid from the filler hole until it starts pouring out of that hole. (For details instructions go to a transmission shop and simply have them check the fluid for you, and top it off for you and check the condition of the tranny fluid)

See if thats the simple problem. Next, if fluid is not full of metallic or other specks in it, and is a bit low, do a fluid and filter change using the required ATF fluid, preferably synthetic.

If that doesnt work, the list can be long, but see if it does, and see if a reputable transmission shop will give you a free diagnostic, and quote on any suggested/needed work.

Good luck man, and please let me know how it goes; id appreciate the education.

One more thing, does your car/tranny have the "Winter Drive" option/button somewhere? If so, use it and solve your 1st-to-2nd gear shift problem temporarily.

If you have one, which my 97 rodeo does, its great because it starts you out in 2nd gear off the line, and then your first shift would be into 3rd gear.

Just a though.
