I see another posting on the same exact issue I had related to having to turn on and off key before car starts. Eventually, I ended up replacing the starter. Today actually. I thought it was my remote start system wiring at first. Until it finally would not start at all last week. Now the dealer is replacing the starter.

May also be a faulty ignition switch but if the dealer has diagnosted it and is replacing the starter than they must have saw it as being the culprit in your situation.

Thanks for using 2CarPros. Com!

Turn the key to start, everything comes on, but engine won't crank, turn key off and on many times, sometimes 10 times sometimes 50 times, engine finally cranks, problem comes and goes sometimes this happens once a month sometimes it happens 3 times in a day. Really don't want to just swap parts out until I have a clearer picture of what is going on. I've been told may be a bad ignition switch or may be a hot spot on the starter, what do you think?

Take a test light and check for power at the starter solenoid (purple wire) at the starter, when the vehicle wont start. See if you have power when cranking, if you have power then the starter is bad, if not trace it back and might be ign switch. Post back with any other questions.

I have a 2005 ascender and have the same exact issue. I ended up replacing the starter today. Hope for your sake it is not the starter. It is not covered on warranty and is close to $700. Let me know if you find out anything else. I do not have my car back yet so I do not know that the starter fixed the issue yet?

My wife's 2003 Ascender has the exact same issue. We replaced the starter module with no luck. Ignition switch is our next target.
If you have identified the issue with your truck, any help would help us out greatly.
Thanks

Weird deal. Key switch will rotate to start position, but starter won't engage. I don't hear any clicking. Won't come out of park position (ie, I can't get it into neutral/drive/reverse), and the dashboard won't light up going through the usual electrical checks. No computer led for odometer, mpg, etc.
Changed battery without sucess. Went through all of the fuses in the engine compartment and the one in the 2nd row in the passenger compartment. Even tried to change out several relays. Called the dealer service dept (200 miles away) and they were no help. Basically said it had to be in the battery or the battery cables, as it should turn over without the computer/fuses.

Any thoughs?

Thanks! This is my first experience here, and am excited to see what kind of response I get!

Sounds more like the igniton switch is bad if that much stuff wont light up. Get a test light and see if any of the wires on the switch turn to power with key on. Big red wire should be hot right from fuse 34 in underhood center. Yellow should go hot when cranking. White and orange should be hot with key in "run" position

I am having the exact same problem with my 2004 Isuzu Ascender, V8 4WD. Works fine some days. Sometimes for weeks. Sometimes it stops working three times in a day. Right now it has not started for 4 hours. Longest ever. Usually it starts after a few minutes. Some suggest it might have something to do with the security system. No correlation with weather or temperature. Ignition replaced under warranty didn't make it stop. Now it seems totally dead. It has a good battery. Plenty of power. New ignition. Some people say it was the "smart key" the chip in the ignition key. But it's definitely worse today. I hear it click, all lights on the dashboard light. Buzzers buzz, then nothing when I crank. When it does usually crank it sounds totally normal and starts like a charm. Sometimes it seems to be

When turning the key everything lights up but won't start, no sound nothing. Few minutes later we'll try again will crank but ni start, then it doesn't do anything again. Checked all relays all good. Just replaced with new battery. When key is turned to on won't let us put it in gear (neutral). What do we do now, didn't even have this car for a year yet!
