2002 Hyundai Santa Fe Repair Question

Alternator
2002 Hyundai Santa Fe 6 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 56000 miles
I had a diagnosis of a defective alternator, and I replaced it with a rebuilt in June. In September, the battery went dead again and Auto Zone said the alternator was bad. They gave me another one. When I put the second one in, I checked the voltage drop accross the battery cables and also their resistance. Both readings were well within specs. In December the alternator was bad again. Am I the unluckiest person in the world or could something else be damaging the alternator?
Answer
Hello –
To better assist you is your vehicle just a GLS or LX. Also please tell me the engine size in liter and the 8th digit of the VIN.
I know you check the voltage across, but please go to Auto Zone (AZ) or and have them pull the codes to the car. Most important: Once they check your codes, if they find something and you don’t get it fixed and need to get back with us, please make sure you tell us exactly what the code was, number and all. Example, if the code was E0568 O2 Sensor bad. Then make sure you give us all of that. This is the main thing here, have them bring their tester out and check your battery and alternator with their tester.

My 2002 Santa Fe is a LX. Engine is 2.7 litre V6. VIN is KM8SC73D42U173390.
Hello –
Well, I wouldn’t say you are the unluckiest person……..at least they are free each time….
Now, I do see a TSB that increased the V6 models from 95 amp to 110…..which one are you installing since AZ has both?

The general appearance (see photos) and part numbers are different.
3. The new generator contains a tapped hole to allow for the mounting of an 02 sensor wiring clip.
VEHICLES AFFECTED:^ Model: 2002 SANTA FE with 2.7L V6 engine
^ Affected vehicle production date range: February 4, 2002
^ Affected VIN range: KM8SC13D42U238719

I do know this much so far: No error codes stored in computer. Alternator diode pattern is bad (same as on the last two) and battery check tests bad. I am installing a new battery and another rebuilt alternator. Same question: what is causing this?
Hello –
My previous question to you was what amp alternator have you been installing?

It lools as though it was the 95 amp model, because that's what the original was. The model year is 02 but the vehicle was purchased in late 01.
Hello –
Thanks for the info...........
Obviously I don’t know for sure about why you keep burning them up…..but…..I am going with the TSB that the V6 models need the 110amp.
My thought….(see what you think)……..the 90amp is running all the time with no rest and burns out the diodes because it is too weak………….
At a certain point since it isn’t putting out correctly it is going to affect the battery…………

Hello –
I was reviewing previous posts and wanted to provide you with this info. Looks like you may have some recalls on your vehicle. The dealer may fix these for free. Please contact the dealer service department, give them the VIN number of your car and have them check on these to see if they apply to you.
