'03 Elantra Timing Belt

I'm trying to change the timing belt on my daughter's 03 Elantra but I can't break the crankshaft bolt loose without the harmonic balancer turning. I ordered a tool through Amazon but it didn't fit, eventhough they advertised as being a holder for Hyundai. I tried breaking it loose with a 1/2 in. Impact wrench, but no luck. Does anyone know how it could be removed or if a special tool is made to hold the damper since I'll have to keep it still while applying its torque.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Respectfully,
Ed

Ed,
The only thing I can offer is that the crankshaft bolts are sometimes reversed thread. Not sure on yours though.

Hey Ed,
Sounds like its time for the trusted "heat wrench"! MAP gas torch (get it at walmart, yellow bottle) and your impact should get it off.

Chris

p.S. Just heat the crank bolt!

When they are put on the bolt is usually secured with locktiight or an equivalent. You will have the belts off already so I offer a couple suggestions that have worked for me. One is a strap wrench that actually goes around the pulley grasping it equally around and binding against itself. Another is more aggressive and it is a large slipjoint pliers that one would use on a large pipe. It works. The strap wrench is a great tool for this and works on filters etc.
