Hi oofer,

Is the coolant level in radiator AND recovery tank correct?

After replacement of the said items, was bleeding carried out?

Under what circumstances does the overheating occurs?

Yes, the levels are good, but bleeding was not carried out and the car overheats when driven a couple miles; when thermostat is out, it is fine around town. Car does not overheat on idle.

Problem seems to be inefficient flow or lack of coolant. It could be the thermostat, clogged coolant passages or a weak water pump. Is the radiator coolant level correct when engine is cold?

Test the thermostat for correct installation and proper opening. Suspend it in a beaker of water and boil it. Check if the thermostat opens fully. Sometimes new parts do give problems.

To bleed system, top up the coolant. Turn on heater to maximum. Start engine with radiator cap off. When coolant level drops, top up. Repeat till coolant stabilises.

Close radiator cap and test drive if problem goes away.
