Strange temperature issues with my Honda

I have a 93 honda del sol type s with over 140000 miles. When I first bought the car, it ran fine, but the temperature gauge only raised slighlty above the C when I drove it. After some months, the temperature reading now gradually inceases, and as it moves close to the middle the car stalls, and the check engine light, oil light, and battery light turn on. When I pull over, and let the car idle, the warning lights shut off. THen I turn on the heater full blast and the temperature drops about a quarter and remains constant. Then I roll down the windows and drive off. With the heater on, I have no problems with my car when it acts up. What's going on, is it my thermostat, is there sludge build up (where), or do I have leaks?

First of all the temp gauge appears to be faulty. When it raised a slight amount it should have been telling you it was overheating and have been pegging to the max temp.

Check the coolant in the vehicle, check for leaks, and also check to make sure there is no air in the system. Watch the car closely for leaks and white smoke. In the meantime, have the thermostat removed and replaced.
