Should the fuel pump engage everytime you turn the key? If so, what could cause it not too? It was doing that before I replaced it now it still does the same thing. Most of the time I turn the key and never hear the pump, every once in a while I can hear the pump engage. The car will not start and I believe at first it was the pump so I replaced it, but no change. Any ideas?

Hi Deadey08,

Fuel pump runs for 2 seconds and stops when ignition is turned on. It will run again when cranking and after engine starts running.

The pump is a rotary type so it is not easy to hear it running. You might be hearing the clicking of the main relay instead.

If engine don't fire up, did you check the ignition sparks? Could be a weak coil if fuel is present.

I changed the fue pump which is located in the wheel well of the driverside rear wheel. I can hear it run every once in a blue moon prior to starting. I haven't heard it so I suspected the main relay. I am going to repace it then if thats not it I wil check spark again and then maybe check pump for power.
