I have a 1998 Honda civic lx with 188k kms, the car runs smooth with no abnormal noise, smoke ect. It does not burn or leak anything. When I start the car after a long period of sitting and the weather is cold I get this fairly loud tapping sound that goes away after a minute or so. I was wondering if the D16Y7 1.6L engine uses hydraulic lifters and if so are they bleeding down? Also, is it possible that the oil control orifice or someother oil passage to the valve train is partially clogged and causing insufficient oil flow to the valves on a cold startup? Im using 5W30 and just got my oil and filter changed 500km ago.

A lifter leakdown problem will cause that and also a sludge-up engine. Try an engine flush. Don't work its time to go in and investigate the valve train components for wear and tear, excessive valve lash etc.
