HX ENGINE SURGES
1997 Honda Civic
I recently bought a 1997 Honda Civic HX with only 68,000 miles on it. I did notice that the car surged a little bit while test driving it, but the dealer reassured me that the problem would be completely fixed. It's my mistake to actually believe him, but anyways. While in the range of 25-45 MPH the car will surge and/or hesitate. It feels like the engine is about to give out, but the RPMs will jump 500-1000RPM and will just surge anywhere from once or twice to a handful of times. It's especially bad on hills. The dealer said the EGR valve was replaced before I picked it up, but it still does it. It also has a very rough idle. Every now and then at a red light, it sounds and feels like the car is about to just stall out, but hasn't yet. It also vibrates a little bit when exhibiting the rough idle. I've heard a slew of reasons from oxygen and coolant sensors, to EGR valves, radiator fluid, air filiters and fuel injectors. Another interesting point is that there was a recall for this car concerning the throttle cable, could this be a factor? The accelerator pedal does feel a little spongy and nonresponsive sometimes, especially around 60-65MPH, you have to press it in considerably far for the car to respond and accelerate again, and 80% of the time it will respond with a nice little surge. Please, someone, anyone, give me some valuable advice. It'd be greatly appreciated.
