Sound coming from around serpentine belt. I suspect it is the AC compressor because when turned on the sound increases considerably.
How far can the car be driven before too much damage is done? Do I need to call a wrecker or is it ok to drive it to the shop?

Drive it to the shop. The bearing on the compressor is possibly going out but it more likely could be the tensioner.

I took the car to my mechanic today and told me that the bracket that holds the Alternator on had broken and was causing th altenator to turn when torqued.
