Can anyone tell me (ball park)
what it would cost for the following repair

Replace rear bumper
Fit rear bumper
Refinish rear bumper in gold metallic

Replace and fit is the same thing. If you purchase a used bumper from a junk yard, you're looking at $100-$150.
New, that'll cost you about double.

To paint, depends on the painter. If you go to your local community college and find an automotive/body student, they'll certainly do this cheaper than a shop.

Student= $100
Shop= $250

Then it'll run you another $100-$200 for the install. Again, it all depends on the installer.

There was actually only a scratch on the bumper, without any paint being taken off, but this is the quote I have been given for the repair.

Just wanted to check that it was reasonable.
I still think I am being ripped off but what can I do.

Well yes, body shops do charge outrageous prices for simple fixes. (They charge 4 hours labor for a job that takes 1 hour)

But they get away with this because most people can't fix it themselves.

That's why I recommend going to your local college. Students usually just want the experience. But of course they wouldn't mind making some extra cash on the side.
