I just received a '97 Passport. I have never dealt with with this type of model before. The automatic transmission fluid has to be checked from below the vehicle by loosening a bolt on the top side of the fluid pan. According to my Hanes manual, I am supposed to use a special temperature gauge to make sure the vehicle is at a certain temp. before checking the fluid. I have asked around about this gauge and I have gotten some pretty crazy looks. Does anyone know what I am talking about and can I check the fluid SAFELY without a gauge?
