While replacing the valve cover gasket. It broke in the motor below the inner edge of the hole. How can I back it out. Will it hurt to drive it to the shop with the hole left open? When I started the car. It was sucking air Im affraid it will suck trash in the motor. The bolt is approx 4 inches. 1/4 inch broke off. Leaving 3+ inches to dangle. Therefor I dont want to leave it on the cover. I fear the bolt will strke the heads as it is running. Any sugestions on what to do will be greatly appreciated

If you hear air coming into the hole then yes you are right to think that you may get something pulled in the motor. I would be cautious to drive this vehicle as you may loose oil quickly. However you may have a chance to get the bolt out. If the bolt broke off flat this is going to be tough to remove however if you have a ledge where the bolt broke you may be able to remove it with a thinscrew driver or small punch and a hammer. Use the ledge to place the screw driver and attempt to hammer the punch to the left (like your unscrewing the bolt). If the bolt is cross threaded this may be difficult. There are also bolt extractors that can be used that you can find at many autoparts stores. This will involve drilling a small hole into the head of the bolt, then hammering in the extractor and unscrewing the bolt out.
