My speedometer is not working right. It sometimes works but when it does it jumps around. I think the speed sensor is bad. What is the Best way of checking without spending $120.00 on a new one?

The speed sensor is a small generator sending electricity to the speedometer. You can test the speed sensor with a voltmeter. The output will be less than one volt.

Hi there,

this may be the dash light dimmer switch at fault, I will look up the wiring information and post my findings when I find something.

My speedometer stopped working randomly the other day, and five minutes later the check engine light came on. The cruise control doesn't work either, and neither does the odometer (mile gage). What is causing this? And how soon should I get this repaired?

Hi rodrsier,

Most likely the Vehicle Speed Sensor is bad and requires replacement. This is quite common and it would affect the CEL, cruise control and odometer.

You can drive the vehicle but it would not be as smooth as it should be and the earlier it is rectified, the better it is.

You can get a connector from the junk yard and splice it on.

I currently own a 1997 honda accord an in the month of january I had the tranny replaced. But within the past 2 months ive had my speedo sensor replaced 3 times! My last one lasted only 2 days and less than 50 miles! I have no speedo most of the time. However every time that the sensor goes out when I shift from d4 to park my engin will pulsate within about a 250-500 rpm range from 1000-1500. I have no idea what is going on and I am starting to get sick of replacing the same sensor. Are there any other problems that could cause these problems? Please help!

This comes right from Honda to the dealers. Try it!
BEFORE REPLACING ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS, TRY THESE TIPS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN Reference Number(s): HSN 0102-12, Â Date of Issue: Â January 2002 Related Ref Number(s): HSN 0102-12 ARTICLE BEGINNING SERVICE INFORMATION Many of the electronic components in automobiles have computer chips. Besides ECMs/PCMs, you'll find them stashed in audio units; speedometers; odometers; clocks; climate control systems; control units for ABS, TCS, ATTS, and SRS; security systems; keyless remote transmitters; and multiplex control units. The downsides of all this high-tech stuff are software glitches or bugs, and vulnerability to voltage spikes. And if that isn't enough, static electricity, lightning, ultraviolet light, strong magnetic fields, radio waves, and radar can make a software bug even worse. Before you replace a suspected electronic component, try these tips first. They could spare you unnecessary replacement. Ã Â Â Disconnect the positive and negative battery cables, and touch them together for a few minutes. This forces all capacitors in the component to drain, which clears and resets the computer chip. If a software glitch is the cause, resetting the chip this way is usually as effective as installing a new component. Ã Â Â Unplug the connectors from the component, wait a few minutes, then reconnect them. If a poor connection is the villain, disengaging and engaging the terminals in the connector cleans contact surfaces and usually fixes the problem. While you have the connector unplugged, look at the pins and terminals for signs of contact. If you have any doubt that things are connecting properly, remove the female pin and use it like you would a feeler gauge to check the contact. If terminals are damaged and need to be replaced, see the article HSN 0800-04 - NEW TERMINAL INSPECTION FEELER TOOL SET, in the August '00 issue of ServiceNews. My speedometer stopped working yesterday--it bounced up and down and then stopped on 0. It sporatically came back on and then off again on a 6 hour trip--4.6 miles out of 333. Is this the sensor, the speedometer itself, or both?

Turn the key on. Unplug the harness connector on the VSS.

The yellow wire should have battery voltage (roughly 12-12.6V). The black wire should be ground. Now if that checks out, plug the connector back in and blackprobe into the orange wire. This is the signal to the PCM. If you can, jack the vehicle up and get a friend to gently put it into drive to have the wheels rotate. You should recieve a fluctuating signal from that orange wire. If there is no fluctuating signal, replace the VSS. If there is no power or ground going to the sensor, repair the wire or replace the fuse as necessary.

Check for a shorted wire and your instrument cluster may have to be programmed to your car. Also can be a bad connection.

Check engine light turned on and shortly after the speedometer quit working. Since the speedo is not working, the odometer does not work either. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi dlynes,

The speed sensor is dead, you need to replace it. Get a scan done to see if there are any other items at fault apart from the speed sensor.

Electrical problem
1996 Honda Accord 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

We took in our car to have the clutch replaced. When I drove the car home, I noticed the speedometer does not work. The needle doesn't move. Could the two systems be related, and could the repairman have mistakenly clipped a wire?

I have a 1996 Honda Accord with 190,000 miles. The speedometer will sometimes drop to 0 and then pick up again to the actual speed. The tac works, however the trip meter and odometer do not work while the speedometer is at 0. The check engine light does NOT come on while this is happening. Could it be the VSS? I've read that if it is the VSS the check engine light will come on. Thank you!
