It has a mechanical speedometer which in cold weather wobbles and goes to fast and then too slow and is erratic unless I run the heat high for a while. Perhaps I need to lubricate it. Do I need to take it apart? There is grease where the cable assembly enters the back of the meter. Should that grease be removed and replaced with new grease?

I've never seen the speedometer cause that.
Only a bad cable.

If it was the speedo, it probably would not be accurate after you got it back together.

You could probably find a used speedo head at a junkyard for next to nothing.
