Having trouble with the cooling system

I refilled my coolant a month ago and I wanted to see if it was doing alright, the light keeps coming on for the cooling system but it was doing that even after I added the coolant. I couldn't get the cap off of the coolant holder (my brother seemed to think that it was empty) after I hadn't turned it on for about 12 hours. Should I just take it into a shop? My knowledge of cars is absolutely pathetic. I simply know nothing about them. Can anyone offer me some advice?

If you're losing coolant then that definitely needs to be taken care of before it ruins an engine. If it's beyond your ability, then get it to a shop before a small repair turns into a real big one.
