1994 GMC Van shifting cable

1994 GMC Van V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 96000 miles
Is that on adjustment on the shifting cable, there appears to be a lot play in the shifting lever. Something you are in drive at drive other times you have to go way passed drive.
