1987 GMC Van Won't hold charge

1987 GMC Van V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 166000 miles
My 1987 VanDura slowly lost electrical power while driving and eventually would not run. Started with a jump but did not run very long as the same thing happened. Alternator? I charged the battery overnight and started the van. I checked the alt. output which was 16.0 and rose to 20.0 in about 10 minutes. I shut the engine off at that point.
