1980 GMC Van Alternator not charging

Electrical problem
1980 GMC Van V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 200000 miles

I had a catastrophic melt down with my alternator.
I replaced it now I do not get any charging registering on my gauge.
The "L" wire to ground and/or to "I" is open.
"I" to ground is good.
Is there a charging relay? If so where?
I have continuity from the "L" wire at the alternator harness up to the firewall.
Where does it go from there?
Grounding this wire does not seem to work to turn on the charging circuit.
When I had the melt down it took out the fusible link at the junction block for the positive lead, this has been repaired.
A direct reading with an ammeter shows only battery voltage of 11.89 and dropping as I let the vehicle run, the same on the instrument panel gauge.
I am at a loss as to where to look next.
The "I" wire has a resistance of 7.8 Ohm.
