ALTERNATOR NOT CHARGING

1980 GMC Van

Electrical problem
1980 GMC Van V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 200000 miles

I had a catastrophic melt down with my alternator.
I replaced it now I do not get any charging registering on my gauge.
The " L" wire to ground and/or to " I" is open.
" I" to ground is good.
Is there a charging relay? If so where?
I have continuity from the " L" wire at the alternator harness up to the firewall.
Where does it go from there?
Grounding this wire does not seem to work to turn on the charging circuit.
When I had the melt down it took out the fusible link at the junction block for the positive lead, this has been repaired.
A direct reading with an ammeter shows only battery voltage of 11.89 and dropping as I let the vehicle run, the same on the instrument panel gauge.
I am at a loss as to where to look next.
The " I" wire has a resistance of 7.8 Ohm.
