1997 GMC Sonoma No reverse

My Sonoma was running great till one day I put it in reverse and heard a "tink". Since then no reverse and it shifts out of first gear around 35-40 mph.
Also have to let off the accelerator a touch to let it shift. Like I said it has been a very reliable truck.
Had no warning signs or sounds from the tranny.
Seems strange just to give out like this. Any ideas?

Appreciate any help you can give me.
(and yes it has transmission fluid. First question everyone asks me.)

Sounds pretty noral really. That is, there was something weak and worked right up until it broke.

Run the selector through the gears while someone watches to see if the shift arm on the tranny is passing the reverse position. IF it does, I would disconnect the linkage at the tranny and do it manually be hand to see it the reverse is not being hit. Then you know it's internal. IF it is original, plan on a rebuild.
