Hello, I recently had my truck up on a lift and noticed that there was some play in both front wheels (driver side more than passenger side). I have not noticed any excessive tire wear, steering noises, loss of power steering fluid or any fluid leaks. It drives perfect. This model sierra has the rack and pinion steering. A local mechanic examined it and said that my inner tie rods needed to be replaced, while the outer tie rods were tight. Curious to know if this is accurate considering I have no signs of a steering problem other than the slight play in both front wheels?

Entirely possible. Stock size tires? Bigger ones will take out the hubs (wheel bearings).

Thanks for quick reply. They are stock 17" rims with 245 tires. I guess I am correct in assuming that there should not be any play in the wheels at all? I don't know a whole lot about rack and pinion.

Little to none. This will create a "loose" feeling when hitting bumps

I've had to replace the right front hub at 93k and now the left front at 160k. Play in the vertical axis should be essentially zero in casual inspection. Each time my bearings failed I had thumping sounds progressing to rubbing in turns. Don't let them go too long.
