Computer problem
1987 GMC S15 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

i have a 1987 GMC S15 4x4 extended cab with a 2.8 TBI automatic, and wondering if it has an ECM or PCM the computer? Because I want to buy a chip for my truck.

Engine Control Module
Controls just the engine and emissions items.

Powertrain Control Module
Controls the engine, transmission, transfer case, ABS and some other systems depending on year and implementation.

In the case of the 2.8 in 87 you have an ECM that takes a special PROM chip. BUT if your thinking a chip is going to make a big difference, it won't. The 2.8 is a VERY small engine for this application. Far better option is to find a 3.4 liter from a Camaro or a crate engine. They are a direct bolt in item, accessories and lines all bolt right up. You gain torque and HP and will also likely see a mileage increase because the larger engine doesn't have to work as hard to pull you around.
