Steering column seems to be loose

89 GMC Sub 145k Inoticed ny steering column moves up & down, seems like it is loose. Where the adjustable column connects to column thru the body is where it feels loose. Nut on steering wheel is on tight.
QUESTION
Is it common for this year sub to have loose column or should it be snug like the new adjustable columns are?
what could be making the column to seem loose?
is this something a backyard mechanic could fix?

THE HOUSING BOLTS HAVE COME LOOSE (COMMON) I DON'T THINK U WOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT, REQUIRES THE WHOLE INTERNAL PARTS TO BE REMOVED SO U CAN GET TO THE 4 TORQUES BOLTS THAT CAME LOSE. TO MANY PIECES TO REMEMBER UNLESS U HAVE DONE A FEW ( 12 YRS GM ONLY FEW)
