My car is difficult to start hopeing you could help.

I just bought a 1988 firebird formula it 66,000 miles on it. the engine is the 305 TBI,it is difficult to start it will crank for ever before starting.I normally have to crank it 3 or 4 times at 3-4 second intervuls befor it will start. sometimes longer, once it's running it runs good.Last night i stoped to get gas and it would not start at all. I took the air cleaner off, i used a rag and covered the carburator with my hand, and had a friend start the car and it fired up pretty easy.
Do you think the choke might need adjusted if so how do i do that. the probaly needs a tune up it has been sitting for a month or three. thanx for the help.
