Models car dies when headlights turn on

1988 Other GMC Models V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 200k miles
i have an 88 gmc vandora van. for the past couple of months everytime i turn on my headlights, my van dies. if i pull the knob to turn on the headlights before the van is even started, it wont start either. if you could help me out i would really appreciate it. thanx!
