Heat & air temps

I have a 1999 Jimmy SLS. The problem seems to be that the belt driven ac unit engages on & off when the temperature gage is set on heat. Is this normal and what may be the problem to rectify the situation

yes this is normal. as long as the control is set in one of the defrost modes.
