Gear shift kicking on automatic

The car is an automatic. It just had a head gasket change recently. The problem is when it changes gear its really hard like it kicking it self to change and it jolts the car even when down gearing. Any clue what this could be?

It sound's like it could be the transmission going out. Have you had the transmission serviced before (fluid flush)? Do you have any check engine lights on or maintenance lights?
