Electrical problem
2002 Ford Windstar 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 110 K miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
My check engine light came on so I took it to a
mechanic. He said it was a code, and I believe he said
444 or something like that. I ask him to check
everything out and see what he thought I should have
done. I had just purchased it and it had 110 K on it.
He said that the battery was not charging to it's full
capacity and the starter was drawing too much
current. He recommended that I have the starter,
alternator, battery, serpentine belt, radiator hoses,
spark plugs, EGR, and PCV replaced as well as the
inline gas filter and the air filter.
He did all this, however, the next day, the Check
Engine light came back on. A couple of days later,
The battery light came on. As I was driving, my
stereo stopped working and the car started missing
or cutting out. Later I noticed the speedometer
was on zero, the temp gage was on cold and the
tack was on zero, then it died on me. I let it set
several minutes and it started right up. I drove
about 3 miles and it did the same thing. This time
when I tried to restart it, it just clicked. I let it set
again for several minutes and it started right up.
I made it another 4 or 5 miles and the same thing
happened.
I called the shop that worked on it and they towed
it to their shop. They told me the alternator they
put in was defective and ordered a new one. After
putting the new one in, they said it did the same
thing. After a day or so, they returned the car to
me, but I haven't found out what they did this time.
3 days later, the check engine light came back on.
I also noticed that when I am driving a steady
speed around 30 to 40 mph, it seems to be cutting
out or missing for a second every once in a while.
When I am parked and just idling, the engine runs
very smooth.
