1988 Ford Thunderbird Heater kills the headlight/dash fuse

1988 Ford Thunderbird V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic
I have a 1988 T-bird and my problem is if I turn my heater on it kills the dash instruments and headlights ... it does this at idle or while driving ... after a minute or after a few days ... the check engine light tends to flash now and again (not sure if it's related).... the rear window defroster works fine ... any suggestions?
