When I start my car, most of the time I have to turn and hold the key, wait for it to ignite, and then repeatedly have to rev the engine to keep it on. Most of the time, it does this, and sometimes it starts right up. Also it sometimes smells really gassy on start up. I have not seen a mechanic about this, I want some ideas as to what the problem is before seeing one.

Whats the air temp in your area. Cold weather is cause for richer mixture. Does the way it starts have anything to do with how long it sits after running? How old are the spark plugs. Take the plugs out and see how dirty/worn they are. Tempos start better in cold weather with new plugs. The sensors that control mixture are the MAP sensor and coolant temp sensor. See that the vacuum hose to the map sensor is good. 93 may have an air temp sensor also. I've never owned/worked on 1.
