I have a 2001 Ford taurus SE 125K. Of late, I hear noise in the engine as if something is rotating. the noise is not there everytime, but unpredictably comes on. The dealer says that its the crankshaft sensor and base. Can someone let me know what would this cost to fix and how severe a damage it would cause if not taken care of.
Thanks

You can do this yourself, a crankshaft position sensor probably costs anywhere from 15 to 70 bucks or so, depending on what brand.. if you have the 12v engine, you can do it from above,, 24v may be easier if you access it thru the fenderwell,, use some car ramps, good plastic ones can be had for around 25 bucks.. damage I don't know about, it sends a signal to the pcm about crank position
